In this post we will look at How To Overcome The Fear Of Public Speaking. The fear of public speaking ranks as one of the most common of all fears and is in the top 5 of the worst fears that people experience. Public Speaking is nerve racking because it means we are in the spotlight and all attention goes onto us. There’s no place to hide and any mistakes we make will be obvious to those watching us.

I myself struggled with Public Speaking and I remember only too well how embarrassing It was to speak in front of a large audience. I can remember when I was young doing drama and every so often we would have our drama exams and have to recite poetry or perform sketches in front of an examiner and other people who had come to watch. Certainly nerve racking, that is for sure.

I guess it wasn’t until I went into teaching that I had to confront my fear of Public Speaking and gradually move from being a fearful speaker to one that is now alot more confident and at ease in front of large groups. This in a strange way is what the best selling author Susan Jeffers of ‘Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway’ promotes. I actually faced my fear and did it anyway. Partly because I had no choice, and partly because if I came across as nervous when teaching in class students would definitely take advantage.

So what can you do today to better help yourself overcome your fear of public speaking. Here are a few ideas that may help you:

1) Run through any presentation or speech you need with a trusted friend or someone who can offer encouragement and support. Practice really does make perfect.

2) Practice your voice and intonation. Does your presentation sound good and make people interested to learn more. Your voice can communicate a thousand words. Think of great speakers. My personal favourites are Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield, Sandy Newbiggings, Brendon Burchard and Paul Mckenna.

3) Another good idea is to mentally imagine yourself doing the presentation and feel how good it feels. Notice how you feel, how you think, how other people in the audience respond to you and really be the goal. When you feel the goal you can achieve the goal.
